Amish Country...

 

One item on our East Coast Bucket List was to visit Dutch Country, or, Amish Country.  During our kid's spring break we decided to take a few days and get 'er done.  We headed out towards Lancaster County, PA where our first stop was the Strasburg Railroad. This old historic steam engine takes you through the fields of the Amish, past their school houses, and into their daily lives.  Our kids, especially Remi, loved sticking their heads out of the windows watching the steam come up from the engine, and catch glimpses of things as they passed us by.  It was a short 45 minute ride, but fun nonetheless.

 

After the railroad, we drove to Intercourse, PA.  The name itself makes you giggle, then you catch a glimpse of two young boys booking it down the road in pony-pulled wagon and you have to wonder "where the heck are we?"  Everything about the town was fascinating.  The Amish women pulling through the drive-up window of the bank on their scooters, or the men doing the same in their horse drawn wagons. The homemade pretzels, jams, cookies, sausages, and much more.  It was so yummy!

To end our day trip, we headed to the Julius Sturgis pretzel company where the first hard pretzels were invented.  We make our own soft pretzels and had fun learning how to roll them and the symbolism that is involved.  We loved our day in Amish Country and look forward to going back again, probably in the fall, so we can experience the fall festivals and more of their yummy baked goods!
